Adding Pages to the THiNC Book:

The THiNC Book uses textures or snapshot for pages. You may use any snapshot or texture as long as they have full permissions.

1. Edit your THiNC Book and select the Content tab.

2. Go to your inventory and select the texture or snapshot and insert them into the THiNC Book.

3. Repeat step 2 until you have all the pictures needed.

4. OPTIONAL: Rename each texture or snapshot according to what needs to be displayed first. Remember the THiNC Book sorts alphabetically. I suggest using names like 1, 2, 3, etc.

Customizing Your THiNC Book Cover:

Your THiNC Book is also comes with a fully customizable cover. Inside the inventory of each THiNC Book *BACK, *FRONT, *SIDE, & *SPINE textures correspond to each part of the book.

1. Edit your THiNC Book and select the Content tab.

2. Under the content folder in the edit window you should see textures named: *BACK,*FRONT, *SIDE, & *SPINE. You must replace these textures depending on which part of your book you wish to customize. To do this just name your new textures these exact names.

3. Delete the textures you will be replacing in the THiNC Book. Note: You may want to copy the original textures to your inventory first so you can go back if you make a mistake.

4. Insert your new textures into your THiNC Books content folder.

5. Now your fully customized texture should be showing on your book cover, you may replace it as many times as you like by following these steps

Frequently Asked Questions

1. I would like a modifiable, copyable & transferable book so I can sell books.

  • THiNC does not sell full permission objects but the THiNC Printing Press will allow you to make a copy of a THiNC Book with no modify/copy/transfer permissions. You may change the permissions for the next owner if needed. This will allow you to sell or even give away your custom book.

2. How do you get text on the book? Can I use a notecard?

  • The THiNC Printing Press & Book only uses textures or snapshots to display pages. By using your favorite paint program you can put text into a picture format supported by Second Life to upload. There are numerous tools on the web to export your work to an image format Second Life can use. Check the useful tools section.

3. How do I get to include a landmark, notecard, play a sound for the books?

  • Currently the THiNC Books do not support addition items to included. The THiNC Printing Press v.2.0a supports making publication that can include one landmark and/or one notecard and/or link to a website.

4. How many pages can a THiNC Book hold?

  • There is no limit of how many pages a THiNC Book can hold. But if you are planning to published the book with the Printing Press the THiNC Publications are limited to 1000 pages.

5. Every time I touch my book it says a bunch of gibberish text to me, what's wrong?

  • The THiNC book is in PUBLICATION MODE. This mode is used only if you want to transfer information to the THiNC Printing Press to make a copy of your book. Edit your THiNC Book and select the content folder. Double click the _SIZE&ORIENTATION notecard. Where it says PUBLICATION MODE the next line instead of YES type in NO. Click save and close the edit window.

6. What size texture should I use to make the pages?

  • Smaller textures are better because they do load quicker but it depends on how detailed your pages are. If you want a lot of detail you might try the highest resolution but you will most likely need to experiment to see what looks best. Here is a table that will help layout your pages.
Low Medium High Highest
Portrait (3×4) 288×384 384×512 576×768 768×1024
Standard (1×1) 384×384 512×512 768×768 1024×1024
Landscape (4×3) 384×288 512×384 768×576 1024×768

7. I think my THiNC Book is broken, it will no longer open when I touch it or accept any new pictures.

  • A common problem is that THiNC Book script can be accidently taken out dragging textures back and forth or by using the open command. Do a search for THiNC book and see if you have the script in your inventory. Insert the script back into the THINC book and it should behave as normal.

Useful Tools:

DESKTOP PUBLISHING (Text & Picture Layout)

  • Microsoft Publisher - (Windows) Desktop Publishing software that exports to jpeg. Easy to use.
  • Scribus - (Windows, Mac, & Linux) Desktop Publishing software that export to jpeg. FREE!

PAINT PROGRAMS (Picture Editing & Design)

  • GIMP - (Windows, Mac, & Linux) A free yet powerful paint program. Just as powerful as programs such as Adobe Photoshop. Only problem as with a lot of open source source software many find GIMP hard to learn and master. FREE!
  • Paint.net - (Windows, Requires .NET to be loaded) A free and easy to use paint program. It has a lot of nice features a good beginner candidate.
  • Adobe Photoshop - (Windows & Mac) The graphic standard of the group. Very powerful paint program. Fairly easy to start but hard to master. Expensive but normally there are educational discounts and there is a free trial available.
  • Paint Shop Pro - (Windows) This is currently what I use. I've started out using it long time ago and it just progressed since. It can do most things Photoshop can but a fraction of the price. Fairly easy to start but semi-hard to master.

UTILITIES

  • ImagePrinter - (Windows) Printer Driver that prints from any windows application an image format such as bmp. Jpeg didn't work for me. Cons is that it makes large files you cannot choose smaller size.
  • Scrapblog - (website) A scrapbook site that is design to produce a scrapbook online. Their software has a jpeg export feature. TOS (Terms of Services) are always changing please be advised to read over them.

Hello, I think I just broke my book :( by stretching it. After I had taken it back and rezzed it again it appeared opened up on the page which was shown when I took it back. From there I can touch/click it but it doesn't browse anymore. What can i do to fix this? Many thanks for your earliest response, Gina Glimmer

Toneless Tomba, 2007/11/02 13:07:
It sounds like the script got taken out of it by accident. This can happen real easily if you use the OPEN feature in SL or just by dragging textures back and forth and accidentally dragging the script also. If you cannot find the script in your inventory contact me and we'll exchange you for another working THiNC book.

mclove dawg, 2007/11/02 11:41:
What is the best size for a texture to be in something like photoshop? The best size to keep the image from looking bad..

Toneless Tomba, 2007/11/02 13:32:
I thought I addressed this in the knowledge base but you made me realized I didn't. Take a look at the addition of #6 of FAQ. That should help out, there isn't a perfect size for everybody but I would do a test page before you make your entire book with that resolution.

mclove dawg, 2007/11/04 17:52:
I am having a problem with this book showing more then 2 pages. Also, the textures show on the front and back of the page. How can i get it to act like a real book and only show the textures on one side of each page?

Toneless Tomba, 2007/11/05 02:25:
I'm not too sure if I understand your question fully. The book can show 2 pages at time like a normal book when it's open. Clicking on a page will flip to the next page. I noticed some people try to add the textures by dragging the texture directly on the book. This may look like it works because all it does is texture the books prim but it does not actually put the texture in the book's inventory. Look at adding pages section for directions, you must edit the book first and drag the textures into the content folder of the THiNC Book.

I got it working ... thanks ... as it turns out .. it had something to do with something ... Im not sure if it was because i didn't have the textures set to full prem, or if it had to do with me renameing the textures after i added them into the book. Not sure what caused it. But i was getting the same texture on both sides of the page... im not sure .. but i worked it out... thanks ... Last question .. i would like a line in the middle of the book .. something to keep the pages from looking as if they run together ... just a very thin line ... any help with that? Thanks ...

Toneless Tomba, 2007/11/07 01:32:
The only way to add a line is you would have to add it on each texture itself. You should be able to draw a line with any paint program.

Hello, I have followed by your help to resize the book I puplicated but the option "Size" is abcent in menu. And standart mode didn't give me to resize my book after publication. How I can do it? And how I can print a newspaper? I don't need binding for newspaper and the sound in the end when I close it, for example.

Toneless Tomba, 2008/04/21 00:41:
Since you posted this in the THiNC book section to size the book you need to do this from editing your THiNC book and double clicking the _SIZE&ORIENTATION notecard. There is a size setting from 1 - 100.

Toneless Tomba, 2008/04/21 00:42:
If you are doing this from the publication that is made from the Printing Press there is a menu tab in the lower left corner when the book is opened. If you touch this you will get a menu. On older version SIZE is not available while wearing it in HUD mode. On the newest version 2.5 you can size HUD sizes. I don't have you in my sales log so I cannot verify which version or products you have.

Toneless Tomba, 2008/04/21 00:42:
As for newspapers the THiNC book is only available in book format. Newspaper format has received very little interest so far. This could also change.

Tami Amat, 2009/01/10 11:56:
Not publishing all pages I've made sure all pages are full perm while I add them to the original book (before publish). I've set them up as *1 then *2 ... etc. But page one and page six are not showing after the book is published. I even updated the press (it's up to date), I've reset all scripts in both book and print press, I've made sure the lines of the note card aren't filled with "so and so is online" or any other chat. The print press said the note card was fine. I don't get it. LOL I have a meeting I need to bring the book to today to pass out. I'll just have to bring the orig unpublished version, but I'd like to figure out why it's not printing page 1 and 6. All are full perm, so I'm unclear now.

Toneless Tomba, 2009/01/11 14:18:
SL can hiccup due to sim lag. From the THiNC book you get the data from chat, if a sim is under stress it is possible that all the data is not transfered correctly. First make sure you have all the cover textures: *FRONT, *BACK, *SIDE, AND *SPINE. I have seen problems if you leave them out. Get the data again from the book again and paste it to a notecard but in a different sim, maybe a sandbox.

Hi, I just bought ThinC Book V2.0. After following the directions on loading pages, the book will not open. I searched for a stray script & there is not one in my inventory. What do I need to do? The size & Orientation notecard is also not working. I'm assuming this is due to the missing script.

Lauren Bisiani, 2009/07/13 13:28:
Hi, I just tried to publish my first book. For some reason I can't get the front cover to show. If I name it *FRONT like it says on the site here, it doesn't show up at all and if I name it *COVER as it says to do on the in-world notecard, then it shows up on the inside of the cover. I have double checked the perms and everything else and still no luck. Any help would be really appreaciated. Thanks.

Can I modify my own Thinc book if I discover a mistake in it? and once I do that, can I republish the same book with the Printing Press?

Missy Restless, 2010/01/10 21:58:
When I attempt to display a single image split into 512x512 left and right halves over two facing pages there is a thin line in the center of the image where the two pages join in the middle of the book. How do some books I have seen display a single image across two pages without getting the line in the middle ?
